Progress evident for Raiders at West Florida Classic

Navarre girls cross country coach Maryann Surratt looks at every meet as a chance for her team to make strides and the Raiders did just that Saturday morning at the West Florida Cross Country Classic.

“Everyone finished under 30 minutes and shaved time off,” Surratt said. “It was really good to see. Every meet is a chance to get better and I thought we did today.”

Cyndi Steadman paved the way for the Raiders on a sunny and humid morning in Pensacola, clocking in with a time of 23:11 to finish 20th overall.

Khiara Newton finished the race in less than 24 minutes as well, posting a time of 23:38.58 to place 25th. Maggie Johnson was 31st overall with a time of 24:13.03.

Alexia Chiapetta (26:39.25, 52nd), Rebecca Fields (27:20.96, 57th), Fatima Garcia-Alcanta (27:26.53, 59th) and Josephine Law (29:16.28, 70th) also competed for the Raiders, who placed eighth overall with 180 points.

Niceville won the 10-team meet with 23 points on the strength of seven runners finishing in the top 10.

Urban said the runners don’t really change their approach the bigger the meet is and quickly turn their attention to the next meet on the schedule.

“For the kids, I don’t think their mentality changes,” Surratt said. “They take each week as it comes. They were already talking about next weekend after this one was over.”

The boys team took steps forward as well as two runners placed in the top 20. Austin Epstein finished fourth for the second straight weekend, clocking in with a time of 17:12.06. Christina Brothers finished 18th in a time of 18:18.05.
