If Navarre’s girls weightlifting team is going to contend for a state title, it will have to count on the leadership of seniors Alexis Prather and Veronica Hall. The two have been in the top six finishers in their respective weight groups the last two seasons.
Prather and Hall followed different paths to find weightlifting and fall in love with the sport.
When Prather transferred to Navarre, she immediately took an interest in the sport.
“The schools I transferred from did not have a weightlifting program. I did not have the opportunity to lift at previous schools,” Prather said. “I decided right away that it was something that I would like to try.”
She took to the new sport immediately and succeeded.
Last year she set a personal-best combined lift of 460 pounds. She had a 245-pound bench press and a 215-pound clean-and-jerk. She placed fifth at state.
Prather enjoys the team aspect of the sport.
“I am motivated by my family within the weight room as well as my family outside the weight room,” Prather said. “I am driven by my desire to be the best that I can be in this sport.”
