Pitching staff drives Blue Wahoos forward

Nick Travieso’s performance against Biloxi earlier this month served as the latest example of just how talented the pitching staff of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos really is.

Travieso gave up just one run and struck out six as he pitched into the eighth inning of Pensacola’s Southern League showdown against the Shuckers back on July 13.

And while the first-half division champion Blue Wahoos did fall, losing 1-0 on the only run Travieso allowed on the night, the numbers the talented Cincinnati Reds prospect put up are a positive sign.

“You can’t ask for anything more from a starter,” Pensacola manager Pat Kelly said. “He did a nice job, never got deep in the count and was possibly on track to complete the game.”

Travieso gave up four hits in 7 1/3 innings of work in the loss but came out of it feeling as good as ever about the progress he has made in his first season in Double-A baseball.

“It felt great to go deep into the game,” Travieso said. “I was confident in my pitches and felt good about the way I threw the ball.”

Travieso is part of a starting rotation that continues to impress, a rotation that gives the Reds hope their struggles will be short-lived once those guys reach the Major League level.
