Patience, confidence key to surviving tough days during minor league season

Jesse Winker found himself in a situation every baseball player dreams about Saturday night. Bottom of the ninth inning, two outs, a runner on in a one-run game and an opportunity to deliver the game-winning hit.

Hitless in his first three at-bats against the Biloxi Shuckers, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos star crushed a ball deep to centerfield. It looked like a walk-off home run.

Instead, Kyle Wren chased the ball down and made a catch against the wall, leaving Pensacola on the short end of a 4-3 score.

Such is life during the marathon that is a minor league baseball season.

“I definitely thought it was gone,” Winker said. “I was just trying to get the barrel there and put a good swing on it. I did. Honestly, I really don’t know what happened. I thought I got it. I guess it got held up in the wind or something.”
