Navarre’s girls weightlifting team preparing for title defense

This season, Navarre’s girls weightlifting team will be defending the state title for the fourth time in five years. It will be Coach Garrett Bagley’s biggest challenge since he took over the program five years ago.

“For the first time in several years, we do not have a returning state champion,” Bagley said. “It will take a total team effort this year and a lot of leadership by our experienced lifters.”

The program has been extremely successful, fueled in part by the sport’s popularity. “This year, we have 150 girls out for the team,” Bagley said.

Dedication is a key component in having a successful program, and the Raiders are not lacking in that regard.

After the state meet was held in February, the Raiders took a week off and have been back in the weight room ever since.

While most high school students are sleeping in during the summer, the lifters are practicing four days a week starting at 7 a.m.
