Navarre set for showdown with Niceville

Navarre is playing for the No. 1 seed in the region in its 7 p.m. road showdown with Niceville today.

The Raiders (8-1) currently sit in the top spot in the latest playoff power poll and can lock up the right to host the first three games of the playoffs with a win in their regular-season finale.

Navarre has won its last four against Niceville (7-2) and is coming off a 40-12 win over Gulf Breeze last week to clinch its sixth District 2-6A championship in program history.

The Eagles dropped a 63-33 decision to Crestview and finishes as the District 3-6A runner-up.

Balance continues to be the key to Navarre’s success.

The Raiders are nearly even in rushing (1,818) and passing (1,823) yards. They feature seven players who have scored at least two touchdowns.

Navarre has scored 40 or more six times and has held five opponents to 12 points or less while pitching a shutout in at least one half four times.

The Raiders are coming off, arguably, their best defensive effort of the season, limiting the state’s leading rusher in Tyler Dittmer to less than 100 yards.

The Raiders are looking to continue their success on the road in tonight’s game. They have won 19 of their last 21 away from home and have lost just one regular-season road game in the last three seasons.

Navarre is guaranteed at least one home playoff game regardless of the outcome tonight and is set to make its seventh consecutive trip to the postseason.

Chris Williams has rushed for 721 yards and 10 touchdowns in what has been the best season of his career. Williams has also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Marlon Courtney is just 282 yards away from 2,000 passing yards for the season. With 1,718 on the year, he needs just 71 to move into fifth for most yards in a season.

Josh Carter leads the defense with 66 tackles. Carter has also forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, picked off a pass and has blocked a kick and a punt.
