Navarre’s girls weightlifting team is sending 18 to the regional and is the champion of the district once again.
The Raiders, who had a total of 20 competing in the meet, scored 77 points, well ahead of second-place Niceville, which finished with 50 points at the four-team district meet Wednesday in Navarre. Fort Walton Beach scored 20 points and Crestview finished with 12 points.
The top three in each weight division advanced to the regional.
The drama of meet started hours before the first participant lifted a barbell. Each lifter participated in the dreaded weigh-in. For the first time in several years, one of Raiders failed to make their maximum weight and she was eliminated from the competition.
Lifter nerves were on display as they warmed up before the meet began.
Despite losing one girl to the scale, the Raiders won first places in seven of the 10 weight divisions to dominate the meet.
The Raiders started out strong, winning first and third places in the three lowest weight division.
Kiara Latouche continued her unbeaten streak, winning the 101-pound weight division with a 105-pound bench press and a 115-pound clean-and-jerk for a combined lift of 220.
