Navarre girls cross country and track coach Maryann Urban lines up her athletes at the bottom of the stands inside the football stadium and gives the command for them to start running to the top.
It’s not an easy thing to do on a humid Tuesday morning in mid-July. The boys and girls participating in the summer workouts are sweating and their muscles ache as they push themselves to be the best they can be.
Not every athlete on both teams is at the workouts each day but the turnout isn’t bad for this being the first year of the summer program.
“This is new for the cross country and track teams,” Urban said. “Football has always done it but our kids aren’t used to it. We’re trying to build a year-round program. It’s been going well.”
Offseason workouts are vital in any sport and cross country and track are certainly not exceptions.
