A cell phone rang during the middle of a first-half water break for Navarre during its boys soccer showdown against Washington Wednesday night in Pensacola.
It was head coach Abdalla Elbaioumy.
Suspended for three weeks after his ejection for arguing a questionable call in the Raiders’ shutout loss to Pensacola Catholic two nights earlier, Elbaioumy wanted to talk with his team.
“He called and told me to put him on speaker,” said James Baccarini, who is filling in for Elbaioumy. “It was definitely a shame not having him here, but he was able to talk to the guys.”
His call provided an extra shot of motivation, not that his team needed one.
Navarre went into this crucial district game already hungry for a win and with its mind made up that it was going to win one for the coach.
Behind by a goal at halftime, the Raiders pieced together a fierce second-half rally that produced an impressive 3-1 win over the Wildcats in a matchup featuring two of the area’s top programs.
