Navarre flag football team to start this spring

Navarre High is getting a girls flag football team. It will play its inaugural season in the spring of 2019.

Athletic Director Scott Murphy confirmed the news Thursday morning. Current Raider cross country coach Sean Tomey will coach the team.

“We’ve been wanting to get it here for about four or five years and we finally decided we needed to do it,” Murphy said.

The Raiders will be an independent this season. They are expected to play a 12-game schedule. The regular season begins in March.

Navarre will join a host of area teams that already have the sport. Navarre will be one of two from Santa Rosa County. The other is Pace, which will also be a first-year team.

“We have great female athletes in our school and we’re going to try to work it to where the girls can still play softball or run track if they want to and play flag football.”
