Moyer plays ball at Blue Wahoos Stadium

Octavien Moyer plays his college baseball in Tallahassee. He’s a junior at Florida A&M. Opportunities to play close to home have been nonexistent in his collegiate career.

Until Saturday.

On a sunny and almost unbearably hot weekend afternoon at Blue Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola, Moyer and the Rattlers played Southern in an exhibition doubleheader.

For Moyer, who starred as a high school athlete at Navarre both on the gridiron and the diamond, this chance to play here was something he will always cherish.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Moyer said. “I’ve always wanted to play a game near home and haven’t done it in the past three years. To get an opportunity to do is pretty awesome, pretty special. It’s a day I’ll never forget.”

There wasn’t a huge crowd, and most of the fans opted to sit in seats covered by shade, but Moyer gave fans a reason to cheer.

He tallied a hit and drew two walks in the first game and then belted out two hits in the second game, including a double that went screaming down the third-base line, the ball dancing just inside fair territory. He also drove in two runs and scored a run.
