Mariah McKinney was all set to make a play on the ball in Thursday night’s Subway All-Star Soccer Game, leaping into the air to head it.
As the Navarre senior made her move, West Florida’s Monica Duckworth did as well and the two collided in the air before falling to the ground.
Both players were fine.
“I didn’t even see what was coming, and when I hit the ground, I was like ‘Oh My Gosh,’” McKinney said. “But Monica and I play travel soccer together so everything was good.”
Things turned out pretty well for McKinney and her teammates on the East squad, which won the game 2-0 over the West on a cool evening at the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola.
It’s the fourth-consecutive win for the East in the game, which features the top seniors from Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties.
McKinney was named the MVP for the East.
“I was surprised and so thankful to accept the award,” McKinney said. “It’s a great honor.”
McKinney was joined by four of her Navarre teammates on the squad. Kaylynn Ennis, Kelsey Haden, Kayla Folse and Julianna DeSalle also represented the Raiders in the game.
