Mason shines in Mid-Summer Classic

Jacob Mason pitched well and had a surprising swing at the plate last Friday in Milton’s Mid-Summer Classic.

First, he went 4 and 2/3 innings against Milton. He struck out five, gave up two hits, issued one walk, and walked off the mound with a 2-1 lead on the scoreboard.

“My fastball was doing well, and my curveball was a good ‘punch out’ pitch today,” Mason said.

Commonly used as a long reliever with the junior varsity squad last year and this summer, Mason started Friday.

“I felt really good in the first couple innings,” Mason said. “I set the pace of how a game will go. I feel like it was a really good day.”

The Raiders’ game against the Panthers ended in a 2-2 tie. Navarre collected eight hits. Tyler England scored twice. Ethan Andre and Harrison Dorsey both drove in runs.

A swift-moving lightning storm delayed the Raiders’ second game against Pensacola Catholic.

Mason’s swing changed as well. Teammates had described it as a “pitcher only swing.”

In the top of the fifth, he stepped up to bat and jacked a two-run homer over the left field fence. It was his first career homer.
