Navarre High School’s girls soccer team had plenty to celebrate last Tuesday as it clinched the top seed in the district tournament with a 4-1 win over Niceville. The Raiders are 7-0 in the district this season.
Emily Madril came into the game against the Eagles two goals way from 100 for her career at Navarre. Many in the crowd were hoping to see her score the 100th at home. Madril scored No. 99 against Niceville and just missed on several other opportunities.
But she would go on to get her 100th in a 3-0 win over Vero Beach at the Monteverde Tournament Thursday.
“The Monteverde Tournament has some of the top teams in the state,” Navarre head coach Rob Simon said. “The competition can only help us.”
Navarre 4, Niceville 1
The opening whistle blew and the Raiders were off and running, leaving the Eagles frozen in their tracks. Emily Madril dribbled down the middle and passed to Jocelyn Fernandez on the left post. Fernandez crossed a pass to Jennifer Seward on the right post. Seward fired a shot past the Eagle keeper, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead. The score stunned the Eagles and fans. The game was only 30 seconds old and the Raiders made it look very easy.
The Raiders scored again at the 22 minute mark. Lizzie Madril shot from 30 yards out. The ball was kicked high and the Eagle keeper came out of the net to stop the ball. Emily Madril reached the ball before the keeper and kept it alive. Seward nudged the ball forward and slowly it rolled into the open net, giving Navarre a 2 – 0 halftime lead.
The second half began the same way the game started. The Raiders scored 30 seconds after the second half whistle. This time, Fernandez found Emily Madril with a pass, racing down the left side. Madril took the pass and headed A the goal. Her shot easily beat the Eagle keeper and the Raiders had a 3 – 0 lead.
