Practice is intense on a Monday afternoon. Navarre’s girls basketball players are running up and down the floor, pressing on defense the moment the ball is inbounded. The season is still months away, but this is where the success starts, where the foundation for the 2019-20 campaign is laid.
“This group realized we were more competitive last year because of what we did in the summer. It paid off,” Navarre head coach Abby Fogg said. “I had players come up to me after the season and say thank you for running us so much to get us ready.”
Madison Schluter is one of the returning players. She’ll be a senior this fall and will run the point. Schluter will tell you just how valuable last summer was for the Raiders, who won five more games than they did the previous season, finishing 11-15.
She expects this summer to be the same way.
“For sure it makes a difference,” Schluter said. “This is a chance for us to develop team bonding and fundamentals, so when the season comes around, we look good and we are ready.”
Fogg is pleased with the progress she has seen from her basketball team up to this point.
