Shelby Freese plays with emotion and energy. She plays with heart, too, and leaves everything she has on the floor for the Gulf Coast State volleyball team.
So when the team comes up short, it’s not an easy pill to swallow. And that much was evident in an interview after a midweek match against Pensacola State earlier this season.
Gulf Coast battled in every game, keeping each one close, but lost in four hard-fought games to the Pirates in Pensacola.
Yet Freese, the former Navarre standout, keeps pushing forward and continues to believe through this up-and-down season for the Commodores, who were 6-8 through 14 games, a stark contrast to the 19-8 record the team fashioned a year ago.
“As a team, we are still trying to find that chemistry and that drive to win,” Freese said. “We’ve had some super close games. We just can’t seem to pull through. We’re still trying to figure out how to win.”
On a personal level, this season has been a pretty good one for Freese. Her stats tell you as much.
