Running back Derrick Smith doesn’t shine in the spotlight for Navarre the way teammate Michael Carter does.
Still, no one can discount Smith’s role in the Raiders’ rushing attack.
A year ago, he rushed for 541 yards and six touchdowns, using his bruising power and bursts of speed to finish as the second-leading rusher on the team.
If Friday night’s two-quarter varsity spring game against Gulf Breeze at Bennett C. Russell Stadium was a sign of things to come, Smith is in store for an even better senior season.
He scored twice, including once on a 25-yard run where he blasted through a hole and ran untouched to the end zone with a minute left, helping Raiders drill the rival Dolphins 35-0.
The junior varsity played the final half and lost 13-7.
