The University of West Florida football team will hold five intrasquad scrimmages this fall that will be open to the public, including one Oct. 17 at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
The other scrimmage dates for the Argonauts, who will play their inaugural season in 2016, are set for Sept. 12, Oct. 3, Oct. 24 and Nov. 7. Those scrimmages will be played at University Park Field on the campus of UWF. All five scrimmages have an 11 a.m. start time.
“These five dates that we have for the scrimmages I think are vital to the growth of our program,” UWF head coach Pete Shinnick said. “It gives us an opportunity to really analyze each guy on our team and what he can do in an ultracompetitive situation.”
The scrimmage at bayfront stadium, which will be the home field of the Argonauts for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, is the highlight of the schedule. Plans to build an on-campus stadium are still being worked out.
“The fact that we are going to go downtown and play is probably one of the highlights of those contests,” Shinnick said. “We will get a chance to play in that stadium and get a feel for that and what it’s going to be like for our guys.”
The Argonauts are allowed to practice throughout the fall like every other NCAA Division II team even though they won’t play games. They will compete in the Gulf South Conference and the schedule for next season is expected to be released in the near future.
