One door closed. Another opened.
And former Navarre standout Xavier Fernandez wasted little time seizing the opportunity, signing with Keiser University to be a part of the school’s inaugural season of football this fall.
“I’m excited,” Fernandez said. “It was hard watching everyone else I grew up with play last season and I’m just a student. I’m looking forward to playing again.”
A 2017 graduate, Fernandez attended Troy and hoped to walk on for the Trojans. It didn’t work out.
He attended a walk-on tryout last year and felt good about his chances.
“I felt like I did really well. I even had an interception,” Fernandez said. “I later found out they weren’t going to pick anyone because the roster was full. I didn’t want to waste any more time.”
A phone call to Navarre head coach Jay Walls got the wheels turning on another opportunity. Fernandez told his former coach that he had heard Keiser was starting up a program and Walls made a call for him.
“Coach Walls said he would call for me and the coaches said they were interested,” Fernandez said. “I talked with them and from there they gave me a chance.”
