Faith carries McElroy through ups and downs of baseball

C.J. McElroy waits for his turn to hit during batting practice on an almost unbearably hot afternoon in Pensacola. When he finally gets his shot, he makes the opportunities count, consistently knocking balls into the outfield.

Afterward, sweat already starting to roll down his forehead, McElroy is stopped by bench coach Lenny Harris, who played 18 years of Major League Baseball, and is given a few pointers about his swing.

Every bit of advice helps. Every chance to hit, be it in batting practice or a game, matters, especially when the goal is to play at the highest level.

The journey to that goal for a player who was a third-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, back in 2011, has had its share of twists and turns, its good days and bad days.
