Ervin helps keep Blue Wahoos in playoff hunt

Phillip Ervin has only been in Pensacola since Thursday, but the pressure of getting his first hit at the Double-A level was starting to eat away at him.

“I felt like I was pressing the more at-bats that went by,” Ervin said. “I was putting too much pressure on myself to get a hit.”

The self-imposed pressure is understandable. Ervin was a first-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 2013, and with his recent promotion from High-A Daytona, he was eager to make an impression.

The star prospect finally broke through Saturday night against Chattanooga, hitting a ball to right in the sixth inning that dropped in front of the outfielder and drove in a run.

It was the start of something special.

Two innings later, Ervin blasted a home run over the wall in left, bringing the sellout crowd of 5,038 to its feet and providing a shot of momentum in a 10-6 win over the Lookouts at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

“It felt really good just to get that first hit, to get that monkey off my back,” Ervin said. “Hopefully I can stay comfortable at the plate, have fun and compete.”
