District final decided by penalty kicks

Navarre and Niceville once again met in the district finals, squaring off with the trophy on the line Thursday night at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

No one was surprised these two girls soccer teams were playing for the district title again. They have been playing in the championship round against each other for the past several seasons.

The fact that the score was tied at the end of regulation was no surprise either. After 40 minutes of action, the teams found themselves tied at 1-1.

After two overtime periods, the score still held at 1-1.

Both coaches selected five players to take a penalty kick.

Three of the five Eagles scored, and three Raiders also scored in the five attempts.

The coaches chose the next five players to take penalty kicks.

Both teams scored on the first four attempts. The Eagles scored on their last attempt, but the Eagle keeper’s diving stop kept the ball out of the net on the Raiders’ final attempt to secure a shootout win over Navarre.
