Dinos dominate Juana’s volleyball courts

Ten volleyball teams rumbled Sunday on the beach volleyball courts at Juana’s for a Dino 4 tournament.

The older the collective team’s age, the bigger advantage the tournament organizers awarded before the first serve was struck.

“Our age gives us an advantage,” said Chad Wallace, who played for D.N.R.

Wallace’s teammate Mike Stamey said, “And we used every bit of that.”

D.N.R. defeated the Young Guns squad 21-16 in the round-robin stage of the tournament. The winners – Wallace, Stamey, Carol Boston and Tim Sweat — had the largest handicap of the tournament, because of their advanced age over their competitors. The D.N.R. team walked onto the court with 13 points.

As for the quality of play by the senior set, 60-something-year-old Sweat still had the reaction time of a younger athlete.

There were two divisions, high and low, which pitted teams with similar skill levels against one another.
