Navarre’s girls softball team scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough as the Niceville Eagles won the district contest by an 8-4 score at Navarre March 26.
For the first four innings, Morgan Marquis shut out the Eagles while striking out eight. Marquis found herself in trouble in the fourth inning. The Eagles had runners on second and third with two outs. The next Eagle batter hit a line drive over third. Left fielder Ali Gutierrez charged in on the ball. She knew if the ball got by her it would roll to the fence and would score at least two runs. Just before the ball hit the ground, Gutierrez reached down and caught it inches from the grass. The shoestring catch closed out the inning,
keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard.
In the fifth inning, luck ran out for Marquis. The Eagles scored four unearned runs fueled by a Raider error. The inning ended when Hanna Stapleton took a relay throw and dove back to first base, tagging out an Eagle runner trying to get back to the base.
In the next inning, Niceville scored four more runs, two of which were unearned. Stapleton came on to pitch the sixth and seventh innings.
