Defense dominates in latest win for Argos

The University of West Florida’s defense played on another level Saturday afternoon.

Forcing a school-record six turnovers, the No. 24 Argonauts dominated the University of West Georgia in a 30-2 Gulf South Conference win at University Stadium in Carrollton.

The Argos held UWG, a regular contender in the GSC and a team that went 10-2 a year ago, to under 100 yards rushing and passing. giving up just 147 overall. They pitched a shutout over the final three quarters of play.

Austin Reed rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another on a windy and rain-soaked 52-degree afternoon.

Jaden Gardner’s 17-yard touchdown run with 4:16 to play in the first half gave UWF the lead for good at 7-2. Ian Bush punctuated the scoring with a safety.

UWF (5-1, 4-0 GSC) grinded out 227 yards of offense, getting on track after a first-quarter safety gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead. Jervon Newton led the ground attack with 100 yards.

Reed completed two of his 15 passes for 43 yards. His 23-yard scoring strike to Kevin Grant with a minute to play in the second gave UWF a 14-2 lead over the Wolves (4-3, 2-2) at halftime.

Gael Laurent recorded seven tackles and forced two fumbles to lead the defense.

Quentin Peeples, Trent Archie and Kedrick Bradley also forced fumbles. Archie and Peeples also recovered fumbles.

Bradley also came through with a pick as the Argos continued their trend of overwhelming opponents. They have allowed just five points in their last two games. Three of their last five opponents have been held to single digits.

The Argos also continued their run of success against the Wolves on the road. They are now 3-2 all-time against UWG, with all three of their wins in the series coming away from home.

UWF has won its last five games and will look to extend the streak to six next Saturday when it plays for the Coastal Classic trophy on the road against rival Florida Tech.
