More than 140 athletes began a five-week challenge Friday at the Navarre CrossFit gym.
Each week, in an event known simply as “The Open,” competitors face a new workout designed to test fitness and strength. The workout remains unknown until Thursday night each week of the Open. Gyms around the world serve as venues for athletes to participate.
Twice on Friday – one session in the morning, the other in the afternoon – competitors converged on the Navarre gym. The workout consisted of 10 rounds of eight ground-to-overhead lifts and 10 bar-facing burpees with a 15-minute time limit.
Gym owner Steve Philpot said just a handful of people completed the entire workout in the time allotted.
Jessica Harrison and Ashley Wolter were among them.
Wolter, who has done CrossFit since 2014, beat the time limit by 27 seconds.
“Honestly, I wanted to see how far I could go,” Wolter said. “Around round six, I had a little doubt that I would make it.
