Jackie Coyne is only in her first season as the head girls basketball coach at Navarre. And she is setting the bar high for the Raiders despite the fact that they won only two games a year ago.
“I want a state championship. That is our goal,” Coyne said. “I’m not saying I won’t be happy if we don’t get that, but our goals are much higher than winning a district title.”
With eight seniors on the roster, Coyne believes she has the experience necessary to achieve those lofty goals. She believes the talent is there to make it happen as well.
“We’re trying to develop a championship mentality,” Coyne said. “This team is loaded. We are eight to nine deep and if we keep developing, we are going to be a good team.”
Jordyn York, Khorri Newton, De’Naizha Elder, Karly Casey, Patricia Cody, Samantha Combs, Delia Vega and Grace Vega are the seniors on the Navarre roster. Skye Buckner, Amber Leggett and Ty’Sheuna Stringfield are the juniors.
Coyne, hired in June, said the players have been working hard to prepare for the season since she took over as the head coach.
“We’ve been doing beach workouts, basketball workout and a lot of fitness conditioning and training,” Coyne said. “We’re getting them into shape because the tempo we are going to play is going to be different than what they are used to.”
