Pat Kelly sat back in his office chair June 21 and reflected on another tough day at the ballpark for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
The first-year manager watched his team get clobbered 11-4 by the Mobile BayBears at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium as a miserable first-half of the Southern League season came to a close.
Mobile belted out five home runs, including two by Gabriel Guerrero, as the Blue Wahoos ended the half with a 25-43 record.
The first-half win total is the worst in the franchise’s four-year history and the record is the worst in all of Double-A baseball for a first half of the season.
“We couldn’t keep it in the park,” Kelly said. “And this is a park that isn’t conducive to home runs.”
If there is anything Kelly can take comfort in it is that the second half is essentially a new season. The records reset and hope is alive and well again.
