The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are coming home in first place.
Despite an 8-7 loss to Jackson in their series finale with the Generals Tuesday night in Tennessee, the Blue Wahoos are still a half game ahead of Mississippi in the Southern League South Division standings. They go into their final series of the regular season against Mobile in control of their own playoff destiny.
The crucial five-game showdown begins Thursday night and concludes on Labor Day at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
Pensacola is aiming to earn its first postseason berth in the four-year history of the franchise. It has already earned its first winning half in franchise history, fashioning a 36-29 record. The Blue Wahoos won only 25 games in the first half of the year.
The Blue Wahoos are looking to become the first Cincinnati Reds Double-A affiliate to make the postseason since Chattanooga did it during the 2006 season.
On Tuesday, Pensacola led 5-3 after two innings but couldn’t hold. Alex Blandino came through with a two-run home run in the inning.
