The interview was just about over and then Navarre head boys basketball coach Taf Bentley remembered something pretty significant.
“Oh, 100 wins,” Bentley said.
The win total is in reference to the milestone he reached Tuesday night after Navarre’s 80-42 dismantling of Escambia. It was the 100th win of Bentley’s career at the school. This is his seventh season with the Raiders.
All of the credit goes to the players.
“It’s only because of these guys,” Bentley said. You saw I couldn’t even remember I got it (100 wins).”
It was nearly a night of two milestones as Matt Harshany entered the game 38 points away from 1,000. He finished with 29, though several times he passed up an opportunity to shoot and dished the ball off to a teammate for a basket. Fellow senior Andre Smith dominated on both ends of the floor and lit up the scoreboard for 30.
The Raiders are 2-0 heading into December and a big showdown awaits Tuesday night at home when they battle a Pensacola Catholic team that won 23 games last year. The Crusaders are 1-0 this year.
“We have a big opportunity Tuesday playing one of the best teams in the state,” Bentley said. “We have to prepare to be at our best for that game.”
