Mike Beaudry three three touchdown passes, including two to Ka’Ron Ashley, and he ran for another as the University of West Florida football team crushed Chowan 51-23 in its home opener Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Beaudry connected with Ashley twice in the first half, including a perfect 9-yard scoring strike to Ashley in the right corner of the end zone with 32 seconds left in the half as the Argonauts took a 21-10 lead into halftime.
Beaudry’s hard-nosed 1-yard run to the end zone in the fourth quarter stretched UWF’s lead to 31-17 and the Argos never looked back as the second-year program is off to a 2-0 start for the second consecutive year.
“I’m really glad to see our team continue to chip away at people,” UWF head coach Pete Shinnick said. “The first half was tight. We felt we left some things out there and really kind of took advantage of things in the second half. We rode the momentum. We are still learning and growing and still trying to develop. I’ll take 2-0 learning and developing than not being in that place.”
Josh Marshall picked off a pass in the opening quarter to put the Argos up 7-0 on a night when UWF never trailed. Ashley’s first TD catch gave UWF the lead for good at 14-7. UWF was playing its first game since Labor Day weekend after the threat of Hurricane Irma wiped out last week’s game against nationally ranked Midwestern State.
“I red-shirted last year and was very anxious to show what I could do,” Ashley said. “I felt I did that tonight.”
