Argo Notes: UWF thriving behind high-powered offense

This may only be the first season of football for the University of West Florida, but with each passing week, the Argonauts continue to play like an established program.

UWF nailed down its second consecutive win Saturday afternoon, topping Mississippi College 42-28 in Gulf South Conference action.

The Argos rolled up 499 yards of offense and limited the Choctaws to 186 yards as they improved to 4-2 overall and to 2-1 in the conference.

Kaleb Nobles has been a constant in the offense all season. Against the Choctaws, he punctuated the stat sheet with 282 yards and four touchdowns. Nobles completed 22 of his 32 passes, with eight of those passes finding the hands of Antoine Griffin, who finished his day with 108 yards and two scores.

Putting points on the board hasn’t been an issue for the Argos this season. They have scored 40 or more four times and average nearly 500 yards (468.5) per game, including 374 through the air. The 499 yards they put up against Mississippi College is their second highest total of the season.

Bellinger leads ground attack: Tim Bellinger is the top rushing threat for the Argos. In six games, the freshman running back has churned out 213 yards and three touchdowns. No other running back on the team has racked up more than 131 yards this season.

Archie shines on defense: Trent Archie picked off his third pass of the season in Saturday’s victory. His interception total leads the team. Archie also came through with eight tackles and was named the GSC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The freshman standout ranks second on the team in tackles with 50, racking up eight or more in each of the last four games. Joshua Smiley is the team leader in tackles, racking up 51 on the season.

Next Up: UWF is back in action Saturday when it travels to Mississippi to take on Delta State. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Statesmen are 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.  Delta State is coming off a 54-42 loss to West Alabama.
