Peter King is spending his summer on an NFL training camp tour with NBC Sports. A three-time national sportswriter of the Year while at Sports Illustrated, King loves minor league baseball almost as much as he loves football.
So, as his crew made its way from Jacksonville to New Orleans last week, King decided to make a stop Thursday in Pensacola, the home of the Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
He joked during an interview that this was his first time ever in the hometown of NFL legend Emmitt Smith and talked about how this stop all came together.
“When we are doing this tour, we like to go to ball games when we can,” King said. “We knew there was a team here and luckily they were home. I said let’s go. They asked me to do the first pitch. It was cool.”
This wasn’t his first time throwing out a first pitch. He used a baseball as he usually does, but there have been times when he’s thrown out another kind of ball.
“I’ve done it twice where I’ve thrown a football for a first pitch,” King said.
