As the regular season winds down for Navarre’s tennis teams, head coach Rob Whitley is quick to point out the improvements the Raiders have made this year.
“We have gotten a lot better as a team,” Whitely said. “It looks like the girls are going to end up third and the boys are going to be fourth in the district. That is about where we usually are. We’re in the top half, which is great.”
The Raiders continued to make strides March 9, defeating Pine Forest in a District 1-3A match. The girls rolled to a 7-0 win while the boys earned a 6-1 victory.
No. 1 singles player Sydney Whiteside earned an 8-0 win over Chloe Stibolt while Sultana Pohlmann knocked off Jasmine May 8-1 in their second singles match.
Jordan Wallace topped Rachel Rudd 8-0 at third singles and Haley Carroll earned an 8-0 win over Diamond Lewis at fourth singles. Lexi Soto nailed down an 8-0 win over Hillary Lewis at fifth singles.
“We’ve had the same five in the lineup all year,” Whitley said. “They have performed really well and are winning the matches they are supposed to win.”
Whiteside and Pohlmann teamed up to take down Rudd and May 8-2 at No. 1 doubles while Lauren Little and Faith Hawkins earned an 8-3 win over Stibolt and Lewis at No. 2 doubles.
In boys’ action, Austin Haswell knocked off Daniel Taylor-Limerick 8-2 at first singles while Samuel Griffin defeated Connor Odom at second singles.
Ian Jones beat Jared Szopinski 8-2 at third singles while Jordan Ruesch defeated Cosian Pierce 8-1 at fourth singles. Chris Stewart completed the singles sweep with an 8-2 win over Pierce Loiselle.
Haswell and Griffin teamed up to knock off Taylor-Limerick and Odom 8-1 at first doubles while Kyle Scheller and Ryan Logan battled Szopinski and Pierce tough in an 8-6 loss at second doubles.
