One of the walls inside Garrett Bagley’s Navarre High School office is covered with newspaper clippings highlighting the accomplishments of his girls weightlifting team during the last four years.
It’s been quite a run.
Bagley has guided the Raiders to three titles in that time, including the last two. Navarre finished second the year (2014) it didn’t win the championship.
“I had a friend (Aaron Daniel) who started the program and built it up and then he took a job at Niceville,” Bagley said. “I was helping to coach boys weightlifting at the time and he asked me if I would take over the program. I did. It was a good move. It’s been a blast.”
Navarre won its most recent title last week, crushing the competition with 37 points. Charlotte was a distant second with 20 points.
Expectations are always high, but even Bagley admits he was a little surprised by the end result.
“This year surprised me. Nine of the 17 girls that went to state last year were seniors. Two other girls didn’t come back,” Bagley said. But I knew we had a shot still. You always have a shot as long as you work hard. So many girls stepped up and picked up the slack this year. I’m very proud.”
