Original Jan. 9, 11:59 a.m.: According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, severe thunderstorms with the potential for tornadoes are forecast for northwest Florida panhandle Saturday, Jan. 11.

Meteorologist Brandon Black said impacts will likely hit the area between noon and 6 p.m.

“Damaging winds and tornadoes are the primary effects. If any storms develop ahead of the band, all severe weather hazards are expected including damaging winds, tornadoes and hail possible,” he told Navarre Press midday Thursday.

Residents are encouraged to be prepared for risks to begin as early as Friday night. Black advised residents to have multiple methods to receive weather alerts such as a mobile device as well as a weather radio plugged in and with backup batteries.

“Do not rely on outdoor weather warnings as they are designed for outdoors and alarms may not be heard inside,” Black said.

In the event of a tornado warning, move into an interior room without windows on the lowest floor of the structure.

Updates will be made as this weather event approaches.
