One national and multiple state records fell Saturday at the Fortis Powerlifting Open in Mary Esther.
Athletes from Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi competed in the squat, bench press, and deadlift disciplines, and a small crowd watched several state-level records toppled in each. A few records were broken multiple times by the same people during the three-discipline powerlifting competition.
Roy Reynolds, 67 from Milton, smashed the previous age and weight division bench press record with 259 pounds. Then on his next lift, topped it by five pounds. And again a few minutes later at 270 pounds.
Reynolds and his slightly older buddy, 70-year-old Roberto Chomat, casually walked away with top honors and state records in their age/weight classes.
Chomat benched more than 242 pounds for his second state record of the day, but missed upping the record on his third lift. But the pair of powerlifting senior citizens didn’t stick around for the awards ceremony.
