BooFest is back!

For the fourth year, BooFest returns to The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre. This year’s event will be held July 25 and 26. Milton native and PGA Tour champ Boo Weekley’s signature annual charity event raises tens of thousands of dollars for nonprofit organizations, including the Air Commandos Association.

Stalking suspect scheduled in court

A Navarre man charged with aggravated stalking for allegedly threatening his neighbor is scheduled to appear in court today. Judge John Simon will preside at the motion hearing for 49-year-old Jeffrey Denver Campbell. He was arrested April 14 and faces three felony charges including aggravated stalking, firing a gun into a dwelling, vehicle, building or aircraft and grand theft of a firearm.

Turtles there, but not here

Each morning at about 5:30, volunteers head out on Navarre Beach to search for sea turtle nests, but so far this year, no action. The turtle patrol started their early morning trips May 1.

Sunset hike to celebrate National Trails Day

In celebration of the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, Gulf Islands National Seashore hosted a sunset hike at Fort Pickens June 7. Around 30 hikers enjoyed a leisurely 2.5-mile walk along the Florida National Scenic Trail, a path of more than 1,000 miles which starts in Big Cypress Swamp and ends at Fort Pickens.

Let’s get it (recycling) started

The county originally handled its own recycling but in 2012 determined it was more cost effective to contract the service to a professional provider. The county entered into a contract with West Florida Recycling, which also brought the added convenience of “single stream recycling.” In other words, residents no longer needed to separate different types of recyclables.

FDOT holds public meeting on Hwy. 87 widening

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) held a public meeting June 3 in Milton to present information and gather feedback on the planned widening of State Road 87 North. The project will expand the hurricane evacuation route from two to four lanes over a 21-mile stretch from Naval Air Station Whiting Field (NASWF) to the Alabama state line.
