Several area sea turtles were rescued recently as a result of the below-freezing temperatures the area has been experiencing. A condition known as “cold stunning” occurs when they are exposed to prolonged cold water temperatures.
Last Tuesday, the water warmed up enough to allow Gulf Islands National Seashore to release five green sea turtles into the Gulf of Mexico. They were picked up about a week prior near Perdido Key as a result of being cold stunned.
“When the water drops below 50 degrees the turtles begin to cold stun,” said Mark Nicholas with GINS. “We picked up five green sea turtles and they were brought to Gulf World in Panama City for rehabilitation.
