Sandle, York, Elder sign letters of intent

Michael Sandle could have easily landed a scholarship playing football in college. But the Navarre senior chose to sign a national letter of intent to play baseball at South Alabama Wednesday afternoon in a packed school cafeteria.

Classmates Jordyn York and De’Naizha Elder will also be playing sports at the next level, both Navarre athletes signing letters to play basketball Wednesday. York is off to the University of Mobile this fall. Elder will continue her hoops career at Pensacola State.

Sandle said he considered football, especially after winning the MVP award of the North-South All-Star Game in December. But after taking time to think, baseball was the sport he wanted to stick with it.

“I was thinking about football but I sat down with my parents and talked about it and decided to focus on baseball,” Sandle said. “It’s definitely the sport I want to play in college.”

Sandle, a shortstop, is consumed with excitement about making his decision official to play for the Division I Jaguars.

“It’s pretty much a blur right now,” Sandle said. “It’s awesome. It’s a dream come true.”

York, talented sharp-shooting guard, wasn’t sure if she would get her shot to play college basketball. In the end, it worked out after the Mobile coach approached her at the Subway High School All-Star Game.

“It means so much because I thought I wasn’t going to get to play in college,” York said. “God has been with me the entire way. It feels good to have this opportunity.”

Elder had similar thoughts. Pensacola State took notice of the crafty Navarre point guard in a game the Raiders played against Gulf Breeze.

“I’ve been playing basketball forever,” Elder said. “It means a lot. “To know the (hard work) has finally paid off is a great feeling.”
