The Navarre Raiders won their first volleyball match of the season Thursday, defeating West Florida Tech in four games at home.
The Raiders and Jaguars traded the lead several times in the first game.
“We wanted to stay close and not allow any big runs by the Jaguars,” Reece Carroll said. The Jags had a height advantage, but it did not phase Carroll and her teammates as they blocked the hard hits by the Jaguar front line.
“I can jump,” Carroll said. “Everyone on the team can jump.”
Two kills by Mary Beloat and an ace by Veronica Ruiz gave the Raiders a 13-11 lead. Sam McFarland gave Abbey Nebarez a perfect set in which she slammed into a Jag blocker to up the lead to 15-11.
However, the Raiders could not hold the lead and the Jags tied the score at 15-15. The Raiders took a 21-19 lead after kills by Carroll and Aubrey Walls.
Then, Walls came up with a big kill from the opposite side of the court to make the score 22-19.
