Raiders split with Florida Dream at tourney

A club basketball team with just six players hailing from four different schools defeated the Navarre Raiders 45-31 Sunday.

The two squads battled for the division trophy in the Navarre Coast Classic.

It was the second meeting of the tourney between the two teams.

The first took overtime to finish. The final game was decided in a five-minute, second-half surge.

After trailing 20-15 at the half, Navarre went scoreless when the club team extended their defense to a three-quarter court press. When the Lady Raiders guards were able to move the ball up court, each trip came up empty.

The club squad – with players from Choctaw, West Florida, Fort Walton Beach and Calvary Christian– extended its lead to 13 with five minutes left before Destiny Juzang’s free-throw broke Navarre’s scoring drought.

Five players scored for Navarre in the final, with Tailor Ernst, Rachel Leggett, Hailey Neely, and Madison Schluter scoring six apiece.

Raiders head coach Abby Fogg took the loss in stride, focusing on the positive.

“There were good moments, but sometimes the shot just doesn’t fall,” Fogg said.

Her assessment of the title game is a common lament in basketball – improving on rebounding and cutting down on turnovers.

Neither of these 2 teams were even the best team that I saw play that weekend.
