Raiders on the road for district opener

Navarre begins District 1-7A play under the lights on a Thursday night. The Raiders head on the road today to Tallahassee to take on Lincoln at Gene Cox Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. EST.

The Raiders (3-0) come in unbeaten and looking for their first win in a new district. They held on for a 21-13 win over Milton a week ago. Marlon Courtney threw two touchdown passes.

The Trojans (2-1), ranked 10th in the latest Associated Press Poll, smashed Tate 43-0 last week. Lincoln cashed in two interception returns for touchdowns and also scoring off a blocked punt.

Navarre has rolled up more than 1,000 yards of offense, with 530 coming through the air. Seven different players have scored touchdowns.

Lincoln and Navarre haven’t played since 2010. That was in the playoffs. The Trojans prevailed 34-33 in overtime.

Head coach Jay Walls was in the stands that night watching the game. Two years later, he’d become the head coach of the Raiders and has guided Navarre to its best stretch of success in program history.

The Raiders are in the midst of a three-game road swing and face their biggest challenge of the season to date.

“We have to be road warriors for sure,” Walls said.

Courtney is 42 yards away from becoming just the third quarterback in program history to get to 3,000 passing yards. Courtney has thrown for 530 yards this season. Matt Webb is the all-time leading passer with 4,461 yards.

Tyler England is closing in on 1,000 career receiving yards. He has 935 in 2019 to go along with 58 receptions and seven touchdowns. England has two touchdown catches this year.

The Navarre defense has allowed just 21 points in the last 10 quarters of play. The Raiders have one shutout to their credit, blanking Pace 34-0 in week two.

The Raiders are 21-2 in their last 23 road games. They have won 23 consecutive games in the month of September.

Walls is 73-17 in his career at Navarre. His team has played in the regional final twice in the last three seasons.
