It took only 23 seconds for the Navarre Raiders to put the firepower of their offense on display in the Kickoff Classic against Chiles Thursday night at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.
Sage Chambers connected with Dante Wright on a 50-yard touchdown pass to put the Raiders in front 7-0 and the two would hook up again on a scoring strike in the final seconds of the opening half.
In between, Darnell Deas ran 40 yards to pay dirt and Mitchell Hunt scooped up the ball on a fumble recovery and rumbled 10 yards for a score.
Navarre led 28-0 at halftime before the varsity backups and junior varsity players saw action in the second half of this preseason game at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.
Chiles scored 21 points in the second half but Navarre still managed a 28-21 win in its dress rehearsal before next Friday night’s season opener against Pensacola Catholic.
“It’s something to build on,” Navarre head coach Jay Walls said. “I liked some of the things I saw. We had success running the ball and success throwing the ball, and we scored on defense. I also thought we played well against the run and covered pretty well against the pass.”
At the end of the day, the record for the Raiders is still the same. The games begin to count next week.
“I told the guys no matter how well we played or bad we played, or no matter what the score is, we are still 0-0, and we have a lot of work to do come Monday,” Walls said. “We have a lot to improve on, a lot to prove and we have to really be hungry.”
