Raiders bring great attitudes and effort to practice

Royce Thomas will be a senior this fall on Navarre’s football team and is planning to play a more prominent role for the Raiders.

Thomas played on both sides of the ball a year ago, rushing for 62 yards and racking up six tackles. He is expected to play wide receiver and cornerback this year, along with seeing action on special teams.

“Spring (practice) has been going pretty good,” Thomas said before practice Thursday afternoon. “I’m learning a lot and feel good about the direction we are going in as a team.”

Thomas said he gained a great deal from the experience of a year ago while playing for a Raiders team that went 10-0 in the regular season – the first undefeated regular season in school history – before falling to Tate 23-22 in double overtime in the opening round of the playoffs.

“Coming off of last year, I learned a lot from the seniors,” Thomas said. “Those guys played hard and played fast and now I have the responsibility of helping to lead the younger players.”

Navarre is in its third week of spring practice and head coach Jay Walls is pleased with what he has seen up to this point.

“The attitude and effort has been great,” Walls said. “We have a lot of work to do still, but that is what spring practice is for. We had a big senior class last year, around 25 guys, and a lot of them started two or three years. We’re working to develop players to step in and fill those roles.”

Practices have been competitive, with the quarterback competition being one of the more watched battles.

Sage Chambers and Caine Adamson shared the signal caller responsibilities a year ago, combining to throw 14 touchdowns. Chambers threw for 691 yards and Adamson threw for 304 while rushing for 363 and scoring four times on the ground.
