Raiders begin to look ahead to 2019 season

It’s quiet inside the football fieldhouse on a December afternoon, the 2018 season in the rearview mirror, the building optimism for the 2019 season ahead noticeable.

Navarre head coach Jay Walls is in his office and reflecting on another successful campaign, his Raiders finishing 11-2 and reaching the regional championship game for the second time in three years.

The Raiders had hoped to play for the 6A state championship. And while they fell short of that dream, losing 49-27 to Crestview in the regional final, this season was hardly a disappointment.

Navarre won 10 or more games for the third time in four years, lost in the regular season only once for the fourth consecutive year, won a district championship for the fifth time, wrapped its hands around a Beach Bowl trophy for the 10th time and made its seventh consecutive playoff appearance.

“Other than the last game, we had a great season,” Walls said. “Like I told the kids, you aren’t defined by one game. You are defined by the season, and with that said, 11-2 is outstanding. We have a lot to be proud of.”
