Public restroom shortage questioned again

The need for public restrooms in Santa Rosa County recreation facilities has gained attention from county commissioners for the second time in less than a month.

On Monday the panel agreed to consider adding restrooms on the Navarre Beach Pier to the ones at its base

However, if facilities are installed, they may be portable toilets. “We’ll look at the options and limitations, obviously, from a space standpoint,” said County Administrator Tony Gomllion.

Last month the commissioners heard from area tourism industry leaders about the lack of permanent restrooms at the new $750,000 Bagdad Mill Site Park, which opened May 16. The omission of restrooms in the 20-acre facility is because of lack of funds.

Much of Bagdad Mill Site Park’s construction budget came from various grants. But there aren’t any grants currently available that can be applied to public toilet facilities, according to Sheila Fitzgerald, the county’s grants and special projects director.
