Kelly Hayes couldn’t have been happier after watching Navarre’s softball team roll through a pair of preseason games last Tuesday night at the Preston Hood Complex in Fort Walton Beach.
A team that lost eight seniors to graduation last season looked as if it didn’t miss a beat in convincing wins over Choctaw (10-2) and Milton (8-2), two teams that combined to win 39 games a year ago.
“We really showed up,” said Hayes, who is now in her fifth season at the helm of the Raiders. “Our bats showed up. One of the things about this team is we were missing key components from last year’s team, but we had a lot of players step up. That’s the expectation and that is what we need.”
Although the games didn’t count in the win column, they provided a boost of confidence heading into the 2020 campaign.
