Pooler readies to blast off to space camp

Jason Pooler turned in his application for the Air Force Services Activity Advanced Space Academy-Aviation Challenge on deadline day back in April.

He played the waiting game from there, learning that he had been selected for the camp at the United States Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., in late May.

The Navarre High School honors student was thrilled when he found out he was one of eight chosen for the camp.

“I was pretty excited,” Pooler said. “I’m looking forward to the experience.”

He was asked if he thought he had a shot to be selected when he filled out the application, which included his accomplishments and extracurricular activities, and he had mixed feelings on it.

“Yes and no,” Pooler said. “I knew I worked hard for everything I put on the application and felt like I had a chance.”

His father, John, was encouraged his son applied for a spot at space camp.

“I wasn’t sure what his chances were to be selected but I knew if he didn’t apply he had no shot. It was worth trying,” John said. “Everything he had put on the application made for a good package and gave him a chance to be selected.”
