Pier fishing offers simple and relaxing experience

James Bodison totes a cart loaded with a cooler, fishing rods and the other necessary items, such as bait, a tackle box, weights and sinkers needed to make his day of fishing off the Navarre Beach pier a successful one.

Though July is typically not the best month of the year to fish, it matters little to Bodison, who takes advantage of every opportunity he gets to take a trip out to the pier.

“Things tend to slow down in July because the water temperature gets hot,” Bodison said. “The best time of the year is the spring and fall. That is when we do most of our damage. But I still come out here every chance I get.”

Fishing off the pier is popular for a variety of reasons. It is a simple and relaxing form of fishing, not to mention cost efficient because fishermen aren’t paying for fuel for their boats. It’s also less work.

“It’s not nearly as expensive and you don’t have to worry about cleaning your boat when you are done for the day,” Michael Smith said. “You can just pack up and walk off the pier when you are done here.”

Bodison said that while fishing off a boat has its advantages, he agrees with Smith’s assessment of the convenience of fishing off the pier.
